If you’re considering betting on Nosferatu, here’s a closer look at what might influence the outcome.
What is 'Nosferatu'?
Nosferatu is a remake of the 1922 German silent film, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. The original German film was an unauthorized adaptation of the classic 1897 Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula.
The original German film changed various details from the book to avoid copyright infringement. For example, Count Dracula was changed to Count Orlok, also known as Nosferatu, which is a Romanian word meaning “the offensive one.”
However, Stoker’s estate sued for copyright infringement regardless and won. The court ordered all film copies destroyed, but thankfully, they weren’t all lost. As a result, the original 1922 film became a highly influential film and defined the horror genre.
Since 1922, Nosferatu has been featured in many movies, and now again in this 2024 remake.
Robert Eggers’ NOSFERATU is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.
Bill Skarsgård will be playing the titular character, joined by Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe. The film will be officially released on Dec. 25, 2024, but had its official world premiere in Berlin on Dec. 2, 2024.
Critical reception of other vampire movies
It’s good to look at other vampire movies to see how critics typically receive them. When it comes to vampire movies, there is a lot of variety in this genre.
There are young adult movies like Twilight and independent films like Shadow of the Vampire.

If you take a look at these vampire movies, they are diverse in genre, aesthetic, and time period. Most of these have “Fresh” scores on Rotten Tomatoes but there are plenty of vampire movies that have not performed well critically. Even though Twilight is an iconic YA vampire series, the first film received a “Rotten” score.
But if you take a look at the Nosferatu films on the list – Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922), Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), and Shadow of the Vampire (2001), which is a fictional retelling of the making of Nosferatu – they all performed very well among critics. The first two have scores most films dream of receiving.
Robert Eggers’ Rotten Tomatoes history
Robert Eggers has not directed many films. He has only directed four feature-length films including Nosferatu.

He might have only directed three films but all three were hits with critics. All three of the films have at least a 90 and he also wrote all of them. Nosferatu is no different – it was announced he was writing and directing the film back in 2015.
Nosferatu is also not his first horror film, The Witch was a horror film distributed by A24 and is considered one of the best recent horror movies. With a strong critical record and experience in the genre, this film may be another critical darling.
Early Reviews and Reactions
While the film isn’t out until Christmas Day, the film has already received over 100 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. As of Dec. 18, 2024, the film has a 94 score with 104 reviews.

Rotten Tomatoes lists the Critics Consensus as “Marvelously orchestrated by director Robert Eggers, Nosferatu is a behemoth of a horror film that is equal parts repulsive and seductive.” The Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney calls the movie “so hypnotically scary as it grabs you by the throat and never lets go.”
But not all reviews are positive. Variety’s Peter Debruge says, “Nosferatu builds to a tragic finale, but is weighed down by pretentious dialogue, somnolent pacing and weak performances, especially that of Lily-Rose Depp as the doomed damsel.”
The film has also received award buzz. Nosferatu received nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Publications like Variety are predicting nominations for Best Production Design and Makeup and Hairstyling at the 2025 Oscars. (Find out how to bet on the Oscars, too)
On the Oscars shortlist, Nosferatu made the list for Makeup and Hairstyling and Music (Original Score). Of course, we will have to wait for the official nominations to see what the movie gets recognized for.
